Therapeutic Massage

What is Therapeutic Massage?

A blend of the corrective & rebalancing effects of Deep Tissue/Sports & Remedial Massage combined with an intuitive awareness of listening to the body as a whole.

Style, pressure & intent is adjusted to match your needs - from relaxing & supportive to realigning & transformative.

Sports & Remedial Massage techniques are used to soften knots, spasms, stiffness & tension, to free up adhesions, lengthen fascia, increase range of motion, detoxify tissues and generally get things moving again.

System-wide neural rebalancing techniques may then be used to integrate any changes and allow the body to come into a natural, fluid state of harmony.

In cases of imbalance I focus primarily on addressing the cause and in creating the optimum conditions for the body to heal & alleviate symptoms by itself.
For example there may be focus on lengthening & loosening antagonist tissues to alleviate the strain on agonist tissues - in other words the place that's in pain may not be the 'culprit':)

What can this help with?

By working with issues in a system-wide holistic manner Therapeutic Massage can be beneficial in a wide variety of situations:

  • Back Pain - lower back, psoas, rhomboids, excessive kyphosis/lordosis, stiffness, feelings of stuckness or being 'locked-up' in certain areas
  • Neck Pain - stiffness, knots, poor range of movement, Forward Head Posture/Upper Cross Syndrome
  • Shoulder Pain - overuse, rotator cuff issues, frozen shoulder, shoulders rounded forward
  • Sciatica
  • Leg, hip, knee & ankle issues - sprains & strains, overuse, mobility issues, gait misalignment
  • Arm, elbow, wrist issues - overuse, Golfer's & Tennis Elbow
  • Repetitive Strain disorders - office work, musician, manual work etc
  • Stress & Tension - recent or chronic
  • Injury prevention
  • Injury rehab (generally after 72 hour acute phase has passed)
  • Postural realignment - a focus on fascia
  • Psychological & Emotional wellbeing - anxiety, depression, a sense of nervous system overwhelm or needing some support

Example

Sciatica

A person presenting with sciatica may be treated with various Remedial Massage techniques to alleviate spasm & discomfort in the lower back, glutes, legs & psoas.
Along with this symptomatic relief however, it is often the case that sciatica-type symptoms can develop due to an imbalance in the overall tension on each side of the body which then pulls the hips out of alignment, impinging on sacral nerve roots. This can often be traced back to excessive tension in the jaw & neck on one particular side which then changes the muscle tone throughout that side of the body. In cases like this, addressing the soft tissues alone will not necessarily provide long lasting results, and so a deeper listening to the patterns that are underneath the jaw & neck tension are required to bring the system back to a more complete state of balance.
